When Google released KitKat we learned that it came with something that took us all a little by surprise, a new Runtime called ART (Android Runtime). Before this Android ran in the Dalvik Runtime since its birth. Right now there is not much of a difference between ART and Dalvik besides ART being ever so slightly faster, but in a year or so the difference will be almost night and day.

Unfortunately one big downfall of ART is the fact that it’s not supported on any other devices other than Nexus devices. It looks like Samsung is going to be the one to change that, somebody got their hands on a Galaxy S5 a little early and found that the device offered the option to run in Dalvik or ART just like Nexus devices. This may not seem like a huge deal but trust me when I say it is, ART is going to be the future of Android and the fact that no devices other than Nexus devices support it is just not right.

Samsung deserves a pat on the back for allowing users to use ART on their S5 and hopefully other device manufacturers will see what Samsung has done here and follow in Samsung’s footsteps.
