people texting at the table

How many electronic devices does the average person own? At what age do kids receive their first cell phones? How many hours does the average person use their multitude of electronics? These questions are just several reasons why technology is interfering in people’s social and family lives.  Many would believe that the new digital age would actually bring people closer due to the fact that people are now always connected to the Internet with the ability to go as far as video chat with others.  So how is the use of technology ruining people’s lives?  The use of electronic devices like cell phones, tablets, and other pieces of technology is ruining people’s relationships because people are more distracted by these devices and they are making people less social since they no longer have to communicate face-to-face as much as they used to have to.

With electronics becoming a necessity for people, what happens if they lose theirs or simply forget it at home? People start to freak out. The time between when people have the thought of their device and the moment that they realize that they do not have it will be the only time that they are semi-calm.  When they do realize what they are missing, people start breathing heavily, trying to remember where they last saw their possession, and what they could possibly have done with it.  The average teenager now spends seven and a half hours using electronics everyday; who knows how long working adults are in front of a monitor or using any piece of technology while at work.  People now rely on electronics for everything including personal storage, important events, entertainment, and so much more.  There is no question about it; people are addicted to their electronics.

In today’s economy, companies are requiring people to have knowledge in computer systems and certain types of software.  To do this, people must already have a past that involves technology.  Once the person becomes a worker at a company, it is very likely that they will have to carry around a cell phone that allows their boss to be in constant contact with them.  They will also most likely sit in front of a computer while working.  This computer will give them access to everything that is required for them to do their job because it is connected to the work resources and the Internet.  This need for workers to be connected to the Internet and always have information at their fingertips is just the start for people to always be connected to electronics.

A new market that technology manufacturers are trying to get into is schools.  In any classroom in any school from pre-school to college, there is at least one computer in the room.  Apple is a company that really pushes the use of their products in classes.  Apple tries to make themselves look consumer and s

chool friendly.  They even make software that allows the teachers to make their own books, make projects for their classes, and give them the ability to control and monitor the iDevices in the classroom.  Even without companies pushing for their products to be used in schools, some schools have requirements for their students to take technology classes just to graduate.  It is not bad that schools are teaching kids about technology though because of how the world is relying more and more on technology.  It is the people that do not know how to function with electronics that are struggling in today’s society.

It is hard to escape from technology no matter how hard a person tries.  In the average person’s home there are more than just a couple electronics that would not have been there 20 years ago.  Every house is wired for Internet, has at least one computer, a television or two, and a couple phones and tablets, but consumers still complain about not having enough.  People feel that having electronics everywhere is natural to them because they are used to always being connected and always having access to these devices no matter where they are or what they are doing.
It seems like the world is always in two places: where it is actually functioning and where society wants it to be.  Right now, in the information age, everyone and everything is being shaped by electronics.  Now is the time that people are not just watching several smart “geeks” build websites and program different pieces of technology, they are actually going out and learning how to do it themselves.  But here is the issue with that: not everyone believes this should be happening.  Parents do not always want their children focusing on electronics when they could be focusing on a book or just playing outside.  The chance for the child to be on the computer or other piece of technology is what might spark them into loving technology and becoming the next great com

puter genius. People are limited to their knowledge about learning to move forward with these technologies.  At work, people just use whatever they are handed and complete their job over and over again like robots.  If the employers believed in helping their employees, they could have programs that were made to help people learn more and maybe help the company grow.

When nit-picking at the details, it is easy to see where electronics are causing negative affects on people and society.  When looking at the big picture, technology is actually making the world a better place in many ways.  When going back to the example about kids being immersed in electronics while at school, it can be seen that the use of computers and tablets in the classroom are creating a better learning experience for students.  When looking at different industries that are now using and depending on technology to get their jobs done correctly and efficiently, it can be seen that these fields are growing quite rapidly and with great success in their industries. One of the industries that has taken technology and has put it to great use in every aspect of the field is the medical industry.  In every medical building in the United States, there are more than a couple computers and portable electronics.  Not only are all the records for patients stored electronically but almost all of the equipment and tools are part of the network of medical electronics that all work together.

The Information Age has opened up a lot of doors for everyone on Earth.  Information no longer has to be looked up in a book at the local library. Now, information is as close as a computer or cell phone as long as they are connected to the Internet.  Database search engines, like Google, make finding relevant and trustworthy information easy to find just by typing in a couple search terms.  With the way computer systems and the Internet are setup and connected, people are always connected to information, other people, and other services like medical records and personal files.  For example, one can upload a file to a server and give access to others so that they can download it or even edit the document while it is still online.  This feature can be seen in Google’s Drive; one person can upload a document, invite others to collaborate on writing the document, or just download it.  This function becomes useful when people are working together to get a project done.  From everywhere on Earth, someone can login to their Google account and work on a document at the very same time as their collaborators.

There is no question that people are always connected to the Internet.  Google, for example, allows the user to use one login for all of its services.  With this ability, the user can access their email and uploaded files from any connected device.  This ability proves how connected a single person can be and has the ability to be.  This ability can be seen in multiple fields that allow anyone with access to the Internet and to a file to be able to access information.  In some medical offices, the nurses and doctors carry around tablets that allow them to instantly pull up the information for a patient and communicate to each other when needed in emergencies.  In another workplace like a business building, workers can all have access to a cloud server where they can upload and download files without the need to walk over to someone and pickup a physical copy of the information needed.

The use of electronic devices like cell phones, tablets, and other pieces of technology is ruining people’s relationships because people are more distracted by these devices and are making people less social because they no longer have to communicate face-to-face as much as they used to have to.  But is this a bad thing?  People are becoming more productive, information can be found instantly, and advancements in technology usually lead to advancements in life and benefit the overall quality of life for everyone.  Also, is it so bad that people are losing social skills?  The belief that something is bad is based on the individual’s belief but if everyone is moving towards a more technical future, why stop innovation?
