Last night news came out that HP was selling WebOS to LG. There were so many stories being told and then being pulled from the internet that it did not seem like this was anything more than a rumor. Luckily, people have stopped making claims and the companies are officially coming out and saying what is actually going on. HP COO Bill Veghte has come out and told us what is really going on; LG is buying the source code, websites, documentation, and the employees who worked behind the scenes in the consumer aspect of WebOS. HP is still going to maintain control over all of the cloud services (everything from the app store, the system that updated the devices, and the services that had any connection with the operating system). HP also plans to keep all ownership of the patents that came with WebOS and Palm.
LG has plans to bring WebOS to their smart tv’s. Interestingly, LG did not say if they would or would not be building any mobile devices with the OS.
Personally, I hope LG brings back WebOS in the form of new devices. Both LG and HP will continue with the WebOS open source program but will be moving forward with the software and hopefully making it better.
