Even though Google maps for desktop just received a significant overhaul and UI change and the mobile version will be soon, Google might attempt to buy up Waze. If Google were to do so it would block Facebook who has openly said they are trying to from buying it. Facebook is reportedly prepared to drop around 1 billion dollars on Waze and God knows both Facebook and Google have the money to spend that plus much more if a bidding war were to erupt between the two huge companies.
If you aren’t aware of what Waze is, it is a crowdsourced traffic map that millions of people use in their daily life’s on their commutes to and from work and on long trips. Needless to say the app is very useful and valuable for each company. For Google it would be a very nice addition to their shiny new Google maps experience, for Facebook on the other hand it would be a new social service that only Facebook would have to offer which would draw more users to using Facebook regularly.
Another company that is being rumored as looking into purchasing Waze is Apple based on the fact that they use some Waze data but we seriously doubt that Apple has any plans of the sort.
