As part of the Glass Explorer Team, I got a notification on Google+ and an email from the Glass team at 2:53 am PST about a major Glass announcement within the hour.  Minutes later, Glass was revolutionized.

As many know, people who went to Google IO 2012 had the opportunity to sign up to be part of the Glass Explorers.  We would be a select few that would be able to pre-order a pair of Glass and have them at least a year before they went on sale to the general public.  Tonight, Google has opened up the flood gates by allowing anyone (in the U.S. and over the age of 18) to enter to win.  To enter, you must use the hashtag #ifihadglass on Google+ or Twitter.  The official rules are as follows:

  • Your application must be 50 words or less
  • You must include #ifihadglass in your application
  • You can include up to 5 photos with your application
  • You can include a short video (15 secs max)
  • Be sure to follow us on Google+ (+ProjectGlass) or Twitter (@projectglass) so that we can contact you directly
  • You must be at least 18 years old and live in the U.S. to apply
  • For more details, please see our full Terms and FAQ

The deadline for the entries is February 27th and those who are chosen will be notified shortly afterward.  The new Explorers will still have to pay the $1,500+tax that the IO Explorers has to pay but to have early access to this device, I would pay anything.

It seems that shortly after the new Explorers are selected, Glass will finally be available for Explorers to pick up and use.  Once the time comes around, Explorers will have to “attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.”  I personally find that as a privilege, not a set-back.

In addition to that, Google also released the official website for Glass:  Within the site, you can watch the video of what it is like to see through Glass, more detailed information about Glass, and the official information about entering to be part of the Explorer Program.

Glass Colors

One of the photos released today, was the lineup of colors that Glass will be available in for Glass Explorers.  The names of the colors specifically are Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale, Cotton, and Sky.  It will be interesting to see who decides to pick up the brightly colored Glass since those will bring even more attention to themselves.

As you can see from the video, it looks like there will be a user interface that is very similar to Google Now that is built into Jelly Bean (Android 4.1/2).  It can also be seen that you activate Glass’s voice recognition command by saying “Ok Glass.”  After saying this, the user has the ability to say which command that they would like Glass to do like a picture or to record a video.

I strongly recommend that all of you at least try to enter; you never know, you might just be selected.  When looking deeper into the terms of the application, I found that Google will be admitting 8,000 new Explorers on top of the 2,000+ that signed up at Goog e I/O 2012.  Make sure to sure with us what you hope to see come out of Glass and what you want to use Glass for.

Google has done something beautiful with Glass.  I cannot wait to be part of it.

“It’s Beautiful”
